Job Description: Forward Deployed Engineer at The Vult

Forward Deployed Engineer

Take ownership of the full arc — from understanding a customer's real problem to deploying the system that solves it. You'll be the interface between our research and the real world.

The Vult builds intelligence infrastructure — localized cognitive architectures, memory-safe orchestration systems, and robotics-grade autonomy stacks. We don't build demos. We build systems that operate under real constraints, in real environments.

A Forward Deployed Engineer at The Vult sits at the intersection of engineering and client impact. You'll identify the highest-value problems in a target account or domain, design the systems to address them, deploy and iterate in-field, and own the outcome end-to-end. If you've ever felt that the gap between "what we built" and "what customers actually needed" was someone else's problem to solve — this role is for the person who makes that gap disappear.

  • Map customer workflows and surface the highest-leverage integration points for agentic systems — translate ambiguity into a clear technical brief.
  • Design and deploy context-specific implementations of The Vult's systems (Project Monarch, Blackvult, uv-lens) adapted to the customer's environment and constraints.
  • Run discovery, technical walkthroughs, and live demonstrations directly with decision-makers at target organizations.
  • Architect lightweight proofs-of-concept rapidly, then iterate based on in-field feedback without waiting for spec approval.
  • Own the feedback loop between deployed systems and the core engineering team — your field observations directly shape product direction.
  • Build relationships in the accounts you serve; you're not handing off to someone else once a system is deployed.

Non-negotiables

You need to be someone who can walk into a room, understand a technical problem faster than the people who've lived with it, and have a working prototype running before the meeting ends. Comfort with ambiguity is not a soft skill here — it's the core job.

  • Strong foundation in at least one backend language (Go, Python, Rust, Node.js) and the ability to read/debug others without complaint.
  • Comfort with API integration, microservice communication patterns, and deploying services in cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with LLM APIs, RAG pipelines, or agentic frameworks — or the intellectual honesty to learn them in a week.
  • Strong written and verbal communication — you'll be producing technical documents for both engineers and non-technical stakeholders in the same week.
  • Extreme ownership. There's no PM managing your calendar. The role succeeds or fails on your initiative.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech program — CS, ECE, or equivalent.

  • Prior internship or project experience in a startup or product-facing engineering role.
  • Published technical writing, open-source contributions, or a deployed side project — anything that shows you ship.
  • Exposure to systems with real-world constraints: latency budgets, resource limits, production incidents.
  • Working knowledge of observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki or equivalent).

Honest framing

The Vult is pre-revenue and early-stage. This is an equity-and-upside engagement — there is no fixed stipend for the initial internship period. What there is: real technical ownership, direct founder access, and a PPO decision made on the basis of demonstrable impact. If you generate revenue for The Vult, you will be rewarded accordingly. We'd rather tell you this plainly than dress it up.

The Vult's thesis is that intelligence infrastructure built to the standards of aerospace and systems engineering — not SaaS demos — will define the next decade of applied AI. The engineers who close the loop between research and deployment at this stage will have built something most engineers never touch in their careers.

We're not looking for someone who needs a manager. We're looking for someone who becomes indispensable before we even figure out what the title should be.
